John Elrayabout this book: The novel PATTAYA BEACH is a fictionalized account based on actual events which occurred over a three year period starting in 2003. The female protagonist, Fah, is a composite of two individuals both of whom were, on the one hand, capable of giving one great pleasure and, on the other hand, frightening 'headaches'. The male protagonist, Ed, is in many respects everyman who seeks an escape in the Land of Smiles. Together they think they've found the holy grail in each other, that is until the reality of their situations becomes apparent and their lives are upended.
PATTAYA BEACH will have seasoned travelers to Thailand nodding their heads in agreement and provides the neophyte with some valuable lessons that would normally take a long time to learn, sometimes the hard way.

Highly recommendedFirst rate story - that keeps you hooked to the end. Work has taken me to Thailand many times over the years and the characters in this book had me nodding in recognition - it's a completely authentic portrayal of the Thai bar scene that really captures the bar girl/westerner dynamic. It's a must read if you have an interest in Thailand - if you don't, read it anyway, it's a gateway to a way of life you would not believe existed. [by Danny]
Great story - totally authenticJohn Elray knows Thailand. Not just the bright lights of Bangkok and Pattaya - but the villages of the north east where his main female character was born. There are now many books set in the Thai bar scene - this is a stand out. Highly recommended. [by Callum]
A Must ReadAuthor John Elray's novel, Pattaya Beach, is a fast-paced page turner that combines his knowledge of Thailand and the Thai people with a talent for putting together a great story. The characters are dynamic and realistic, the dialog natural and flowing, and the plot intriguing. Not without some wit here and there, the story of Ed and Fah's involvement and the external forces that shape their destiny will ring true with those familiar with Thai-farang relationships and the Pattaya bar scene. A must read!
