Alicia Deanabout this book: Death Notice is the first in my Northland Crime Chronicles Series. The books are suspense with romantic elements and all feature the same main characters; Monroe Donovan--a journalist who (like me) loves strong, strong coffee and who (unlike me) never quite measures up to her four brothers in her mother’s eyes. Her love interest is Homicide Detective, Lane Brody. Lane has a wife who is being treated in a mental hospital until she’s fit enough to stand trial for the murder of her lover—a man she was having an affair with while married to Lane. I conducted a lot of interesting research for the book. Some of it involved police procedural work, which I’ve always found fascinating. I also researched trivia--Lane is a bit obsessed with useless trivia, and I learned a lot of useless trivia myself while researching.
When Monroe was twelve, her best friend, Katie, was snatched out of Monroe’s back yard during a tent sleep over. Hours later, she was found dead in the woods behind Monroe’s home. Her killer was never caught. This mystery has helped to shape Monroe, and members of her family, and is an underlying sub plot throughout the stories. Eventually, readers will know the complete truth behind Katie’s murder.
The story is set in the Kansas City area, where I lived from 2006 to 2009. Although Oklahoma is my home, and now I’m back, I’ve always felt a special connection to certain areas of Missouri and I loved living in KC.
As in almost all the books I write, there is at least one mention of two of my biggest passions—Major League Baseball and Elvis Presley.
I love suspense novels; I’ve been obsessed with reading them for years. I wanted to create a series with a cast of strong characters who are interesting in of themselves, but become involved in various dangerous situations that create a high level of suspense. I hope I’ve accomplished that. Whether or not readers feel I pulled it off, and whether or not they enjoy my writing, I love connecting with readers and hearing feedback.
