Glyn Smith-Wildabout this book: 'Repercussions' is the second part of the Ben Coverdale trilogy. It finds Ben going back to the UK to face up to the unpleasant Donald after Mary has agreed to live in France with him. The meeting is hostile, and results in Ben, Mary and baby Alex being chased half way across France by one of Donald's cronies.
Much more is learned about Donald. Six years earlier, he had to leave South Africa suddenly. He was involved in the death of a coloured girl. But he left behind an illicit stash of raw diamonds which he now wants to retrieve to rescue his ailing businesses. He recruits the help of the Lucas, the man who smuggled him out those years before and with his help he manages to get out of the UK and into South Africa without trace. Lucas negotiates the sale of the stones in Amsterdam, but when they arrive back in the UK, only Donald disembarks from the Stena Line Ferry.Lucas is found dead in his cabin.
Donald's interest in Mary was far from romantic. He considered that she looked similar enough to the coloured girl for him to be able to pass her off as the girl. Now that she had left him, he is concerned that she might know more than she should and issues instructions for her "to be dealt with" appropriately.
A sad, desperate drug addict is recruited to carry out the deed. Whilst he fails to kill her, he causes her severe injuries from which she recovers.
While everyone else is celebrating her recovery, Ben is worried that Donald will try again.
'Repercussions' is aimed at readers of any age who enjoy suspense and mystery novels.
It took about eighteen months to complete, much of this time being taken up with research into diamond mining in South Africa (thanks to Janine Roberts for her informative book "Glitter and Greed")and the world of drug abuse in France and the UK.
