Rene Natanabout this book: Immersion in a different culture can be a traumatic experience, and more so at an older age. Contrasting the vision of an old gentleman raised in an Italian castle with a personal valet to that of his son, a Canadian engineer building seismographs at the cutting edge of technology, form the background of this novel.
Uprooted from his ancestral castle, the Lord of the Red Manor, Lucio Maria de' Vigentini, makes an effort to adapt to a new lifestyle as his son takes him to live with him. Lucio is in poor health; years back he lost a son, Rick, at sea and his Canadian wife left him, taking six-year old Rick's twin, Chris, to Ontario. The prophesy that the last descendants of the de' Vigentini titled family will be plagued with accidents, crimes and untimely death, tortures old Lucio no matter how much Chris jokes about it and surrounds him with love and care. Chris' identical twin Rick, once lost in the Adriatic Sea, has been rescued by Croatian Gypsies and taught to lie and steal. Only in his teenage years he has been adopted by a nice couple; from there on Rick tries to live a normal life. When a young Croatian man comes in possession of Rick's documents, he asks a cosmetic surgeon to shape his ugly face to look like beautiful Rick.
As two precious cups, once part of the Red Manor's historical heritage, come to light, more than one man goes after them, bringing crime to Harrisville, the peaceful town where Chris and his father are trying to paste their life together.
A missionary priest of Italian descent speaks words of hope and faith to bring peace to Lucio's troubled soul while Lucio, preoccupied of the progeny's continuity, plays matchmaker for his unattached son.
