M.E. Skeelabout this book: My book is about a young boy who faces huge challenges to his survival. It is based on a true story. Richard is 8 years old when he accompanies his convict father on the journey to Australia. He lives rough on the streets of Sydney Town and Port Macquarie while his father serves his sentence. They start again by opening a butcher shop, only to be framed for stealing cattle. Richard is sentenced to hang at the age of 15. What would you do to survive? Find out what Richard does and how he triumphes in the end.
Reviewers so far have said: "riveting, fast-paced, captivating and a wonderful story"
"The book is rich in historic detail and accuracy, but makes a fascinating read for young and old."
I discovered the story of the real Richard in the 1990's and spent two years researching the details in the museums and old buildings that still survive. I was inspired by Richard's courage and ingenuity in the face of death and the unknown. I wrote this book with young adults in mind and the genre is a combination of historical adventure and story of survival. Modern teenagers face a difficult future and I hope this story of triumph inspires them to never give up.
The manuscript sat unfinished for twenty years while I pursued a career as a High School Science Teacher and Wildlife Rescuer. Last year, semi-retired, I returned to writing. My first two ebooks are true life animal adventure stories. One is about a Bilby (Walpajirri: The Legend of an Easter Bilby) and the other is about a Platypus (Platypus Dreaming).
A few months ago I picked up this manuscript and decided to finish it, after a friend pronounced the story "mesmerising". It took three months to revise, finish and edit and, I am very proud to say, it is now published.
