Marta Merajver-Kurlatabout this book: Practically everyone I talk to complains of stress. As a psychologist, I attended numerous seminars in which learned colleagues discussed strategies to make it go away. However, I upheld a completely different point of view. Well aware that stress is an adaptive response or defense mechanism that we inherited from our ancestors in the early Pliocene, I was convinced that it had come to stay. Although we do not face the same dangers that threatened cavemen, we are subject to new, unmanageable risks coming from both the outside world and our internal world. Then I decided that the key to the problem was, simply, learning how to manage stress. Hence the title. In consonance with it, the cover is an inphograph standing for the unbearable situation of ill-handled stress.
It took some in-depth research into biological and medical treatises. One of my fields of expertise within Psychology is Neuroscience, but it took more than that to account for the phenomena involved. Anthropology also helped me understand how that positive adaptive response of yore had become a nightmare to contemporary man.
This book is different from all others on the subject in that it does not provide "magic recipes" to get rid of stress. Instead, after explaining different stressors that will prey on different personalities, it encourages and guides the reader so that, through introspective techniques, he/she may cope with stressful aspects of life.
Some people love being lied to. They run after the gurus that promise eternal bliss provided certain rituals are practiced. If you belong in that group, this is not the book for you. But if you are ready to take up the challenge of taking a journey into your psyche and learning who you are, you will find truthful answers and effective ways of dealing with stress.
After everything else has failed you, it is well worth giving it a try.
