Joan Johnsonabout this book: With the easy-to-follow massage techniques in "The Healing Art of Sports Massage," recreational athletes and pros alike can: Rub away stiffness, one muscle at a time; improve flexibility and increase circulation; recover more quickly from a pounding workout; overcome post-exertion fatigue and soreness; and bounce back after hard efforts (and achieve higher performance). Praised by Frank Shorter (Gold Medalist, 1972 Olympic Marathon) as a book "destined to become a classic. Joan's book shows athletes of every kind how to perform at their peak and avoid injury."
In this excellent guide, a Colorado sports massage therapist explores the basic components of massage before explaining massage techniques and strokes. Initially, Johnson describes the differences between regular massage and sports massage (in the latter, strokes are deeper and intended to benefit overworked muscles). She addresses the importance of using a proper work surface (not a bed), offers suggestions on scented and unscented oils, and discusses various massage styles. The bulk of the guide contains illustrated instructions for massaging specific body parts. A rundown of various sports and the particular massages suggested for their enthusiasts as well as advice on injury prevention and mental relaxation round out the text. What with sports massage increasing in popularity, Johnson's effort should find a ready audience of both weekend warriors and serious athletes. -- Sue-Ellen Beauregard
Prevent injury and improve sports and athletic performance through special massage techniques which promote healing. This unusual title promotes self-massage, so techniques don't require two people in order to prove effective. Excellent-quality black and white drawings prove fine illustration of techniques. -- Midwest Book Review
