Elaine Mellonabout this book: This book is very unique. It is a mini case study covering 19 years of my son's journey through the special ed system. The good, the bad and the ugly are all discussed. Nothing is held back.
I wrote unREAL because our story needed to be told not only to help other parents but help foster change in our education system. The primary readers are parents of special needs children but there is really something for everyone. I am also trying to have my book included as required reading at colleges/universities to supplement or compliment student teaching experiences. It took me over 3 years to write.
I thought I was finished when Blake graduated high school but then he had some eye opening experiences his freshman year in college that I just had to add.
A phrase I mentioned often to administrators was "We are missing a piece to the puzzle" hence the puzzle background on the cover. The computer was added because I wrote the manuscript on my computer and the blackboard was a perfect picture to represent the classroom.
"unREAL" was a prefect title because there are many events in our story that are unbelievable but true."Beyond Report Cards" represent the fact that grades do not tell the whole story. Grades are not the under/over as to one's success or failure.
After reading unREAL, I want my readers to be more confident and self-assured that they are doing the best advocating for their child.
