David McGukinabout this book: David McGukin's debut novel, Trove, exposes the immense treasury of 18th century pirate, Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. The story follows widow Luna Belle Black and her struggle to find her place in the life once provided by her husband, Federal Judge Moses Black, heir to Blackbeard's three hundred year old estate.
The flamboyant Luna Belle finds herself unprepared to deal with greedy relatives, an ancient curse, and the battles mounting against her on Cowbell Island. The plot unravels as a coming-of-age adventure for the sixty-five year old jaded socialite, but hinges on the vast multi-generational wealth and those that have come under its powerful spell.
The novel takes place in the coastal region of Georgia, known for its rich history, character and natural beauty. This setting, along with the genuine Southern charm of the characters make for an enchanting, unforgettable reading experience.
The fictional Cowbell Island in the book was inspired by McGukin's love for the area. A research trip along Georgia's coast ended when McGukin turned east from Midway and looked out across St. Catherine's Sound. "It just seemed to be the perfect place for the story to unfold. I could easily imagine this mysterious island with exquisite architecture tucked away along the Georgia coastline."
