Gary Bullockabout his book: This story had its beginnings when I worked at a radio astronomy site some time ago, and much of the detail is taken from my experience there. This is my first book, and the most startling thing I learned from the process, was that I love writing dialogue! I have loved writing this story, and I hope it shows. I also designed the cover myself, and feel that it captures the spirit of the story.
I believe in soul mates. I am supremely lucky to have found mine. But are soul mates eternal? Do they cross space and time? If one dies, what happens to the other? Is there a second chance? Elsewhen says 'Yes".
I also wanted to create characters who not only loved unreservedly, but were well-spoken, highly intelligent people. Nerds, actually. But nerds with highly unusual abilities. To wit:
What if the ability to step into an alternate reality were the next step in evolution? What if a few such gifted individuals were among us now? Little LAURA BESS AUSTIN is one of them. She is wise and insightful, with a unique view of the nature of Time (it doesn't exist). Her childhood friend, LIJE (ELIJAH) GRANT has a photographic memory – of the Future. They are both brilliant Science prodigies, all at the tender age of 8. They grow up in a small Kansas town, fascinated with astronomy, and the ultimate cosmological questions -- Time, the Universe, and Eternity. They become inseparable soul mates.
But Laura Bess is lost in a plane crash on her way to a prestigious California University, at age 17, and Lije is devastated.
Years later Lije works at a deep space tracking station and discovers a small black hole, which threatens the Earth with total destruction.
And that's when a very alive Laura appears, and explains to a bewildered Lije that she "stepped aside" into another universe to escape death, and cannot stay in his except for a short time.
Laura, trapped in her universe, works on a top-secret teleportation project. Because she has been caught vanishing as she "steps aside" to meet Lije, she is under suspicion from a prima-donna physicist, and a blandly menacing security agent.
They need to find a way out, to another alternate universe they can both share.
Time, whatever that is, is running out. While the sadistic agent cruelly interrogates Laura in her world, Lije desperately tries to reach her as the doomed Earth's clock ticks. But with the help of a friend, a little quantum physics, and a wise and mysterious Native American woman, they find an ancient path to a new destiny, Elsewhen.
• "Bullock's intriguing story combines elements of science-fiction, romance, and suspense. ...A focused, fast-paced journey between alternate universes." – Kirkus Indie Review
