Dr. Gautam Soparkarabout this book: Tired? Sleepy? Lacking concentration or drive? You may have sleep apnea, especially if you also snore and are overweight. Sleep apnea is known to affect about one in four men and one in ten women and even this may be an underestimation. Children can also be affected.
Sleep apnea is characterized by repeated pauses (or near-pauses) in breathing while asleep. Considering how common it is, this condition is amazingly low on the radar for most people and even for many healthcare professionals. The result: most people with sleep apnea remain undiagnosed and untreated. This is a shame, because effective treatment is available and can transform a person's life. In addition to producing poor sleep quality and daytime sleepiness, sleep apnea can be associated with many health issues: high blood pressure, heart problems, strokes and even diabetes - the list is growing. Sleep apnea needs to be treated not only to get better sleep but to try and reduce the risk of other serious health problems. Unfortunately, due to lack of awareness, three out of four people with severe sleep apnea don't even know they have it!
"The Quick and Easy Sleep Apnea Book" is just that - a concise, illustrated and practical book designed to raise awareness and dispel myths about a very common but poorly recognized condition. The author is a doctor who deals with sleep apnea and many of the medical problems that go with it. Readers will learn why it is important to detect sleep apnea, when to suspect it, how to get tested for it and what treatment options are available (contrary to general belief, there are quite a few).
