Suzanne Synborskiabout this book: Jimmy and Julia are two college students haunted by oppressive memories of deceased, tyrannical mothers. Julia, who possesses above average intelligence, becomes a reclusive overachiever. She focuses on one thing--getting straight A's to please her mother. Jimmy, who was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, cannot achieve his goal of pleasing his mother. Frustrations erupt, and he becomes a serial killer focused on punishing women who look like his mother.
While researching myth for her thesis, Julia comes across a library book defaced with a angrily scrawled message in red ink. The message was written by Jimmy who is furious that his grandfather had returned the book to the library. Julia returns the book and later finds that the woman named in the red threat was the victim of a serial killer. Jimmy and Julia both begin a quest to locate the book, Julia because she wants to stop the killer, and Jimmy to cover his trail. Jimmy gets to the book before Julia can. In the book, he finds Julia's check-out slip with her name on it. Jimmy knows he can be traced by the note, so he begins to stalk Julia, first as a potential lover, then after a turning point during a hurricane, as a victim. Thus, their lives become inextricably intertwined.
Only a library angel can free them. Will she get there on time?
