Book: Counterweight (The Black Ships) by A.G. Claymore

A.G. Claymoreabout this book: It's now fifteen decades since the events of 'The Orphan Alliance'. Though most of the species now lives for centuries, thanks to the plague vaccine, some are still isolated enough to have avoided both the plague and the vaccine. The vast majority of humans are now essentially indistinguishable from the Midgaard, the species behind the Norse legends of old Earth.
The two original races of the Alliance are now one people.
Those who've avoided the plague now exist only as isolated pockets on fringe worlds.
One such group, the descendants of the Guadalcanal mutiny, come into contact with another of history's leftovers and the results might just destabilize the shaky detente between the Alliance and the Republic.
Though this is book 4 in the series, many have been reading it as a standalone and then going back to Book 1, treating it as a prequel. This series treats our species as the main character, but it still tends to focus on a select few who carry over from one episode to the next.
