Rob Rowntreeabout this book: I wrote Unbound Brothers after having some success with short story sales. It felt like a natural progression to move on to a novel length piece of work, and after some thought I decided to write about our fear or the unknown, and the fear of the 'other'.
The novel deals with the search for a lost starship, in a future where space exploration is dying. There is a conspiracy at the heart of it, and the plot twists and turns until we finally arrive at a very bad place. Full of sacrifice and courage it also comments on our need for exploration as a species, our 'wander lust'.
Setting out I decided to write in the style of a thriller, with hooks and intrigue pulling the reader on, leading to an unexpected ending. I also wanted to make the novel dark and creepy, not the usual mix of space opera tropes and judging by the good reviews I've been getting i think it's worked.
Amazon UK "It's been a while since I read the book, yet Rowntree's powerful, but delicately drawn descriptions of the sights, sounds and sensations encountered by the protagonist continue to haunt me. If it was a song I would call it a grower - a great read whose qualities become more and more obvious with time, even long after reading."
Amazon.com "Rob Rowntree's debut novel is a mix of Arthur C. Clark and Michael Crichton... Rob Rowntree is a strong writer with a bright future... writing is clean and tight, with excellent dialogue and good pacing. The characters are well written and believable, with plenty of tension to go around and keep the reader involved."
The title reflects not only my main characters demise, but also the hierarchical structure of my aliens, the themes dovetail nicely. Overall it has come together well and having my wife design such a great cover helped immensely.
I'm please with the result and think I've achieved what I set out to do and written a novel that thriller readers and Science Fiction readers will enjoy.
