Peter J. Maher about this book: The first book in the series, but number 3 in sequemce due to two prequel novels. This book lays the foundation for the entire series but it can be read as a stand-alone novel. It is also an introduction into the powerful Coalition of Worlds but deals primarily with the life and death struggle of a young university student Shari - chosen by destiny to be the Custodia - the end result of a long and complex manipulation of the human genome. She has been chosen to face the awesome power of the Cortex entity Saemal. This creature began life as data-archive in the service of the First Race, but at some point it transcended its automation to begin the First Great War. It was eventually defeated and confined to a cold moon at the edge of Coalition space where it waited patiently to return to power. I wanted to show the innocence of a young girl thrust into a Galactic war beyond her understanding. She had no cencept of the role she would play in the future of the human race. It would be her young daughter Elicia who would give birth to the future Emperor of the known Universe.
