Matt Langfordabout this book: The Burning Man Prophecies is a collection of 13 short stories ranging from horror to science fiction, thriller to real-life literary fable. The stories are cherry picked from the dozens of shorts I've written over the last 10 years – some were written following observation of real events, others are mere twists on more ordinary, day to day phenomena.
I feel that anyone can enjoy the stories – there is something there for everybody. Whilst the more unusual stories are aimed at readers in their 20s and 30s, the real-life fables can also be enjoyed by an older readership. They are all written in a simple style that excludes nobody.
The cover and the title come hand in hand. I like to experiment with light in photography and chanced upon a photo of myself surrounded by torchlight. Given 30 seconds to then come up with a title, the Burning Man seemed a no-brainer – it seems to encompass quite pointedly the mind within the unusual nature that underpins all the stories.
The most difficult part of writing the collection was actually polishing the stories and taking them from unfinished ideas to readable pieces of work. I've found that around 10% of writing time is taken up by actually getting the words onto a page, but the final 90% is taken up by cutting, fixing and drawing everything together into a professional looking piece. The extra diligence is worth the effort, however – a simple comma, change of phrase or removal of redundant words can make all the difference from a readable story to something that people want to tell their friends about.
I've enjoyed some very positive feedback and, if people enjoy my stories, do look out for 2 forthcoming novels. I'm not short of ideas...
