Brett Stadelmannabout this book: Aethos is a science fiction adventure story in which the inward journey of the main character (Nathaniel) is reflected in the physical journey he undertakes with some unexpected travelling companions.
It's a story of spiritual (in the loosest sense of the word) awakening, and of the struggle against bigotry and biased preconceptions, both within ourselves and in the world at large. And it's a personal exploration of the nature of belief, and the psychological origin of superstition and religion.
And, of course, it's a love story.
"The City was perfect. A marvel of engineering and architecture, it stood as a fortress against the desert winds, and as a bastion of hope and of faith. Its people lived without fear of disease, war, famine, or poverty. But all was not what it seemed.
As the pious civil officer Nathaniel Grey was about to find out, a danger lurked in the City's heart, one which no one would ever have dared to consider. Thrust from his life of comfort and security into the cold and lonely life of an outcast, he begins to see that everything he had ever held dear, that everything he had ever held to be sacred and immutable, was only an illusion, and that the true source, and potential, of the mysterious energy that powered the City, an energy known as the Aether, may be vastly more subtle and complex than he could ever have imagined."
