Jean-Louis McMillanabout this book: "Desire & Prejudice" is the debut novel from author Jean-Louis McMillan.
It is a story about two "star-crossed lovers" that is very reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet, but with a modern-day, Middle Eastern twist.
Adam suffers from PTSD after witnessing a horrific event while serving in the French intelligence agency, the DGSE. He loses his wife and his children and basically his whole life as he buries himself in his work, avoiding women and friends. Then there is Jasmine, his lover, who is recovering from her own trauma—an abusive husband—not to mention she feels suffocated by her "position" in her family and as a Muslim woman in general. With their traumas between them, their family backgrounds, and their work, Adam & Jasmine are NOT meant to be, and they embark on a dangerous love affair. They travel together, make incredible love to one another, and confide in each other as friends. But they don't confide everything; they are not inseparable.
When Jasmine learns the truth about Adam, it shocks her, and her shock comes as more than a surprise for Adam.
Will love be strong enough to keep them together?
Like other books and other beginner authors, part of "Desire & Prejudice" is based on my personal experiences. I started writing it as a short story, which I extended over nearly two years of writing and erasing. Rather a spot of research allowed me to alter the placement and nature of events either to be faithful to my personal story, but still to blur the individuality of characters involved in.
The writing of this book and the detailed descriptions are part of the treatment of my personal PTSD, from which I suffer for decades.
Everything, it seems, is part of my recovery. It doesn't end.
