Kris Bockabout this book: Finding a dead body changes a person.
I know this from personal experience, and that experience inspired What We Found. Not only did I draw on real emotions, but I started with a curious fact: many people don't report crime scenes they find. Why? What might they be hiding that has nothing to do with the crime?
In my fictional story, 22-year-old Audra is back in her small New Mexico hometown, where she just wants to fit in and help her younger brother. Those priorities change when she finds a dead body while walking in the woods with a former crush, Jay. For reasons of his own, he insists they don't report the body. When Audra can't accept that, she makes enemies. Plus, the dead woman was murdered, and someone starts targeting Audra with dangerous harassment.
Though she's not sure at first whom to trust, she does have allies. Two of these are an older woman and her adult grandson, who are both involved in falconry. This was inspired by my own chance meeting with a falconer, which led to multiple visits, interviews, and the chance to tag along on hunts.
I have published over 20 books, for children and adults, through large publishers and small ones. Of all of them, What We Found is the most personal, drawing on some of the most unusual experiences of my life, good and bad.
