Pippa Greathouseabout this book: The Strasburg Chronicles, Book Four: The Return of Lucy Grace by Pippa Greathouse
It is in December of 1849 that seven-year-old Lucy Grace Kennedy actually meets William Becker (known as "Billy the bully") deep in the woods when she becomes lost on the way home. But Billy doesn't seem at all like his reputation. When he brings her safely home, she knows she will consider him her friend forever. She believes in him.
When, eleven years later, Gracie comes back to Strasburg after finishing art school to live in the local dormitory, the first thing she does is to accidentally "steal" Deputy William Becker's horse. When the chase ensues and Gracie is knocked out, he realizes who she is. But not before he discovers what an unladylike mouth she has developed.
He isn't about to put up with it. And she isn't about to put up with him telling her what to do.
Add to that the thefts that have been occurring, first in the dormitory, then in businesses in Strasburg, and the process that William is narrowing down in fingerprinting, even though it has not yet been considered admissible in court. Gracie and William team up to try to find the thief, and end up finding much, much more than they bargained for!
I love writing, and I particularly loved writing this book, because the seven-year-old Gracie was based on the character of my own Grandmother, who was born in 1894. She left me notebooks in her own beautiful handwriting before she left us, telling the story of her life. She was precious, and I learned so much from her.
Even though this book is a standalone, as all of mine are, "Merrie's Hero" (the second book in the series) first introduces Lucy Grace at her new school just after her mother has passed away and her father moved to Strasburg to fulfill his wife's dying wish; that Lucy Grace gets has a good education.
As always, I would have to say the most time-consuming part of the book is the research. But this is not a complaint! I love researching, and it's so necessary when it comes to writing historical fiction.
I do hope you'll enjoy reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing it!
