about this book: After reviewing a historical novel proposal, an editor asked me to write and submit a contemporary novel to her. Excited about the opportunity, I started by looking for an interesting setting. I spent an afternoon reading the encyclopedia and when I stumbled across Venezuela and the rich history surrounding the Pearl Coast, I knew I'd found the place for an incredible treasure hunt tale. The story is a contemporary one of a young woman, Isabel, who travels to Venezuela to spend time with her grandmother and finish up her Master's degree at Central University.
Her story is tied to the past through the journal entries of a Spanish sailor, one of the first Europeans to walk the Venezuelan coast. As he and his shipmates enslave the natives and force them to harvest the pearls in the coastal waters, he is moved with compassion for the plight of the Indians. He rescues one young maiden and ends up committing murder and treason to save her.
And while Isabel is translating the dangerous adventures of her ancestor, she is experiencing some real-life drama of her own. "Pearls" weaves romance, history, suspense, travel, and adventure all into one book!
