Chiarin is a half-elf, which means her place is at the bottom of society. The elven king considers half-breeds vermin, and many of them are enslaved as children. Those who are not slaves live on the edge, and Chiarin keeps herself and her sister alive through burglary and pickpocketing.
Then she bumps into fellow half-elf thief Zashter, and her world is turned upside down. Her attraction to him is instant, and his mastery of their chosen trade is obvious. In an impulse she asks him to take her on as a pupil, and is astonished when he agrees.
Initially their relationship is strained - Zashter's casual mockery grates on Chiarin, as does her relentless attraction to him. On top of that, she knows that Zashter is hiding something, and whatever it is may not be to her advantage.
Yet as she becomes ever deeper entangled in his dangerous undertaking, she discovers things are far more complicated than a matter of like or dislike, trust or mistrust, and she will have to face the biggest choice of her life; a choice in which love will play the chief role.
• "It was a perfect blend of fantasy, adventure, and romance, and I found myself quickly flying through the pages and hoping it would never end." — Lindsey
• "The build-up of the relationship between Rin and Zash is tangible, palpable, to the point that I held my breath when they were on that knife edge point of succumbing to desire." — Patrick Moss
