Liz Fieldingabout this book: Eloping With Emmy is a road trip book, with the heiress heroine, Emmy Carlisle, desperately trying to reach the penniless artist she's sworn to marry. Tom Brodie, meanwhile, a lawyer who's fought his way up from his working class routes to the top of his profession, is - in the absence of his partner - put in the awkward position of having to buy off the groom.
The chase begins with Emmy stowing away in Brodie's car and he finds himself in the unenviable position of doing "whatever it takes" to stop her.
When she discovers that flirting with him won't get her what she wants, she "borrows" his car. Brodie however, is more than up for the challenge. He might not approve of what her father's doing but he knows his duty. The cat and mouse chase continues through England and France with first one gaining the upper hand and then the other, all the while growing closer.
This is the kind of wisecracking, mapcap romcom that Cary Grant made famous back in the 40s and 50s.
