Louella Nelson about this book: Mail-Order Mate, my best-selling romance, opens with a bear attack that scars the heroine emotionally as well as physically and sends readers on a journey of adventure, betrayal, and the promise of love.
I was originally inspired to write this book because of the people I knew and the experiences I'd had when I lived in Alaska, where, at the time I wrote Mail-Order Mate, my sister and two brothers and their families were living. I dedicated the novel to them and to my daughter Stacee, who now lives in California, not too distant for regular visits with me in Orange County.
Southeast Alaska boasts stunningly beautiful terrain; unforgettable and inspiring. The people are known for their warmth and durability. I went to school in Southeast at a Christian boarding school called Sheldon Jackson High School, where I met many Tlingit, Haida, Inupiat, and other Native friends; my school-mates there have been the only students, out of the many schools I attended in my youth, to stay in touch and welcome me when I return to what I still think of, despite new technologies, as the Last American Frontier. The animals are wild and many are dangerous, the weather harsh at times, though away from the coast it's often in the 80's in summer, and the seafood is the sweetest in the world. I tried to imbue Mail-Order Mate with that combination of beauty, rugged caring family and neighbors, and wilderness bounty that I find lives always in my heart.
