Spencer Bailey about this book: Tens of thousands of tourists visit Cusco and walk the Inca Trail every year, both inspire in ways that can only be fully appreciated by those that have been fortunate to experience them. What inspires me is not the actual visit or the walk, it is the hidden interactions and relationships that spring up amid the ruins, and they provide the backdrop for this, my second novel. When a wealthy, handsome businessman from Lima, crosses eyes with the impoverished but beautiful local girl, Sylvia, he tempts her back to his luxury house in the elegant district of San Isidro, but his bigotry and hatred is tested to the limits by the simple innocent questions of this youthful girl eager to learn more about her own cultural identity.
The cruelty and savagery unleashed upon this innocent woman terrifies and humiliates, until she is helped in her escape by an old family friend, the gardener Lucio. He remembers his own past, brought back to him in the form of the unmistakable green eyes Sylvia inherited from her maternal grandmother, Lucio's ex boss of four decades earlier. A race across the country follows, bringing a series of harrowing consequences to all concerned.
