Tom Barryabout this book: Leaving the Corporate world and life in the fast lane is a momentous choice for many, and something that is forced on others by circumstance in mid life. It can be a time of fear and uncertainty, with loss of self confidence and self-worth. But if the many skills and experience we take for granted in the corporate world can be re-purposed, it can be the best turning point in our life. My distinctive competency in management consultancy was persuasive communication. I believed that if I could turn these talents to novel writing, then I had the potential to be a best-selling author.
In When the Siren Calls I created a character who embodied the skills of persuasion, but uses them in a manipulative way. I coupled this with my knowledge of Tuscany and the overseas property market to weave intrigue and deception around a passionate, cathartic love affair between two driven people – Isobel and Jay. The result, I hope, is a unique and moving emotional drama that really does combine business with pleasure.
Everyone can relate to the central theme, a woman's struggle to live a life that is true to herself, not the one that her workaholic husband or fickle friends expect of her, but this theme is developed in a way that raises fundamental moral issues, because we see her actions, and their consequences, from multiple points of view, rather than a typical "women's issues" type perspective.
