Septimus Berowne is one of 10 siblings born to the impossible Dolly Berowne, who cared so little for her children she couldn't be bothered to name them properly. They all bear Latin numbers for names, thus Septimus is the 7th child.
Lady Louisa Shittlehope, widow of an elderly merchant but daughter of a marquis, has come to town to give her ward a season. Instead, she is besieged by the Berowne boys, all much in need of marrying a fortune. Only Septimus refrains, but he is the one she becomes friends with.
Drawn into the circle of the disreputable family, Louisa very soon begins to manage their lives, more or less adopting the youngest girls and trying in vain to prevent her ward from becoming involved with the youngest man. A dastardly plot leads to a frantic chase in which everyone joins...
