Elizabeth Baileyabout this book: This was my very first published book. I wrote it in frustration, because I'd been trying for so long to get it right! I decided to just go for it and write a rollicking romping adventure with what is usually called a chick-in-pants. I invented horrible villains, a startlingly handsome rakish hero and threw my runaway heroine into immediate danger.
To my amazement, the book was accepted and I became a published author. I realised then that this was the way to do it. Throw caution to the winds and just plunge the hero and heroine into trouble and let them find their way out of it! As a guiding principle, I think this has been the case for all my stories and it works.
Characters do take over. I know it sounds hard to believe, but the truth is that when you are completely involved in the story yourself, becoming the characters as you write, then they do seem to take on a life of their own. They dictate the story. You may try to write what you planned, but they will often go off in a completely different direction and force you to rethink the plot! It's infuriating, but I've learned to follow where they lead because they are invariably right.
