Mary Lee Tiernanabout this book: Are our lives just a brief flicker on this earth and then we're gone? Or do we – or our life-forces or souls - go on to exist in a spirit world? The answer has fascinated man for as long as he has existed. I wonder too. And if we do live on, where? Here on earth, but in another plain? Are ghost examples of the intersection of the 'real' world with this other dimension?
Whether we believe in ghosts or not, they intrigue us. We read and write about them, scare each other with stories about them, watch them in movies and on TV, visit haunted places, and with modern technology, try to capture proof they exist. Perhaps that's part of the fascination with ghosts. There is no real proof that they do exist, but then again, there is no proof that they don't.
Ancient Greeks and Romans recorded sightings of ghosts in letters and wrote ghost stories. From that time on, encounters with ghosts have been recorded in almost every culture worldwide. Famous Greek philosophers Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates all stated in their writings that the soul of man was immortal and imperishable - death is not the end. And hasn't that idea continued to the present day? The terms may change, but almost all religions address the concept of heaven and hell where souls go to be rewarded or punished for their behavior in this world.
Socrates went a step further when he wrote, "Souls are always hastening to the upper world where they desire to dwell." The 'upper world' for Socrates is our world. What if Socrates is right? And what if one of those souls broke through to our world? What if Carey's experience in Running from Myself could really happen?
