Book: Diane's Descent by Erin Thornecategories: Book, Paranormal, Suspense, Supernatural, Horror, Fiction, Psychological Thriller
Erin Thorneabout this book: This novella was easy to write, in that its setting is based entirely on a real place, and difficult as well, given that the characters are my own, and I also needed to fact-check quite a bit. The farm where the action takes place really did exist in upstate New York. My aunt lived there during her last years, and I have great memories of visiting and wandering around the property.
I had to look up a great deal of agricultural and seasonal information about the region for this project. Winter wheat is featured as a staple crop grown by the protagonist, and I wanted to ensure that the timing of the sowing and harvesting was correct. Diane is meant to be largely self-sufficient, growing as much of her own food as possible.
Local wildlife plays a part as well; Diane enjoys exploring the woods that surround her small farm, and she has an arrangement with local hunters who wish to cull deer from her land. I needed to have accurate knowledge of hunting seasons in the area to portray this, which of course equated to more research.
Luckily, I could see the house and its woodland acres in my mind's eye the entire time, so describing Diane and her uninvited guests was simply a matter of visualizing them there. Of course, it is a work of fiction, so the plot was developed in my own imagination, but it certainly helped to have a ready-made place for it to unfold.
