Thea Hartleyabout this book: This book is Thea Hartleys first venture into international crime. As a result USA practices and the work of the FBI were researched. This gives the book a whole new dimension, buT is just as intriguing as her previous books.
The case starts however as a straight forward "missing persons investigation, Kate Gilby and her daughter Sophie have been missing for four years without trace, one day a woman, who says she is Kate Gilby turns up in rags in a bust Cardiff street and collapsed. She is taken to the university hospital and the police are informed.
The case is allocated to DS Angela McCarthy as part of her professional development, leading to promotion.
There is however, two immediately large problems: firstly, the woman who has turned up looks nothing like the photograph and description of Kate Gilby and she denies any knowledge of her daughters disappearance,
Failing in her invrstihgation, Angela consults with Resa, a consultant criminal psychologist. Working on the few clues they have, Angela gets a breakthrough, leading to a different line of enquiry. She discovers that Kate Gilby is only the tip of the iceberg in a much more complicated scenario.
The investigation builds up speed as many different strands are discovered. Murders occur and thr discovery of a 'gang' of criminals lead the investigation to America. Unbeknownst to Angela the FBI have been watching an organisation which appears to be at the root of Kate Gilby's original disappearance.
The investigation assumes international importance when FBI agents travel to the UK to work with Angela's team.
Momentum grows as 'Kate' is re-abducted and the identity of some of the criminal gang members are uncovered.
A thrilling car chased, followed by a revelation makes this book an exciting read.
This is without the underlying personal problems of Resa herself, which reach a breath-taking conclusion.
