Bessie Jamesabout this book: "Intimate Acts with Strangers" is a memoir of Bessie S. James. As the memoir begins, Bessie is a thirty-five year old, married woman with three young children living a middle-class lifestyle in Billings, Montana. She had always been fascinated with the "sexual divas" throughout history -- the sacred prostitutes, the grand courtesans of Europe, the scarlet women who changed history, etc. After a year of diligent research and much soul-searching, she got her husband's grudging assent to try a trial-run at escorting to see if she could provide a transcendent experience to her clients without being sullied by the profane aspects of the sex trade.
By the time she was thirty-eight, she had moved her whole family to Seattle and become one of the most successful and lauded escorts in the city in an exclusive penthouse apartment. Along the way, she found love, empowerment and liberation.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this book is the contribution of Zachary Porter, her former client and eventually her lover. He spent two years interviewing Bessie, tape-recording their conversations, and turning it into this absolutely unique, graphic memoir. The result is a book that will upset many, delight many more, and fuel raging debates at book clubs around America about the root causes of male/female disconnections, the utility and necessity of prostitution, and why there aren't more books around that can get both sexes juices flowing like this one.
Warning: As one reviewer said, "It straddles the line between erotica/pornography but the writing is so good I couldn't put it away."
