Joshua Yatesabout this book: This book is about using individual, person-based solutions to some of the most compelling policy issues we, as U.S. citizens, are forced to deal with right now. What issues? Why do pay income, rather than consumption, taxes? Why can't we have a new WPA-like program to change welfare to work-fare? Let's take the House of Representatives, as it is now, and expand it and make it more focused on the citizens across the country, instead of making politics only for Washington insiders.
I was inspired to write this book because I frankly spent a year talking to my wife about these issues. She simply asked me "why are you telling me what I already have heard? Write about it!"
Readers who believe that we should be fiscally conservative will enjoy this book. The cover was chosen to be compelling to my readers because it hits on many of the issues covered in the book - changes in military spending, changes in rail (I discuss the need and effectiveness of high-speed rail in my book), changes to how Washington, D.C., works with its national citizens.
The hardest part was dealing with occasional writer's block...and the fact that in the middle of writing and editing it, our son (who was quite a surprise!) was born. What did I learn? It takes longer than you think it will. It took me more than a year to write it, and then tear it apart, edit it, and rewrite some of it.
I have a background, both professionally and from a great deal of graduate education, in history, economics, urban economics, economic history, communication, and political science. I have also spent time in some minor political offices, so my ideas came from years of study, observation, some casual research, and from mere experience.
To my readers: You may not agree with all of my ideas. However, I do hope you will at least then use that sense of disagreement to think about how you, as one person, as a citizen, can make change happen (for the better) within how our country is run. If you like my ideas, please talk to your leaders to encourage them to make these changes!
