Blair Gowrieabout this book: The plot of "The Adventures of George" is loosely based on the United Nations and is a humorous and satirical look at international leaders and celebrities, both past and present. In the story, the President of a certain country and the five permanent members of the Security Council become a Chef and his five cooks at an exclusive New York club. This is how the story goes:
George's club was the social centre
which men of power desired to enter,
and everyone knew that there could be
no better place to talk and see
power and influence at close hand
with leaders abundant from every land.
The story is told in narrative verse, and this is unusual in that narrative poetry is not often found these days.
The five cooks, who are not named, are based on well-known national leaders, past and present, and the reader should have no difficulty in finding Charles de Gaulle, Margaret Thatcher, Hugo Chavez and others. The remaining characters in the book have names little different from those of established personalities who were once, or are now, in the public eye, and the reader will come across The Dear Leader, the Bearded One, Mustafa bin Maden, Didi Damin, Borrock Sobama, Stavros Onassos and many more.
The story gallops along at a fast pace with our hero George having adventures involving all these characters, some of whom are friends and some of whom are foes. And, when they are free, the cooks entertain their colleagues by recounting their own tales, so that there are stories inside the story.
