Book: Permanent Damage by Kirby Wright
|5 stars, 1 review on Amazon|
Kirby Wrightabout this book: This is a collection of poetry and prose poetry in 2 mini books that are entitled "Circling For the Kill" and "Forces of Nature." All have been previously published in online literary reviews or hard copy university magazines and journals.
The thread that unifies the poems is a disillusioned narrator living an unfulfilled life that seems to circle without going anywhere. He sees similar lives being lived by his neighbors, but they are so wrapped up in their daily duties of going to work, shopping, and raising families that they lack the ability to step back and see themselves. There are also flashbacks to "a girl in sapphire" as the narrator laments a lost love during a simpler existence in the past. The lost love theme continues in "30 Years Between Letters," a poem with couplets that speaks to the naivete of young love where the lovers "believed in fire/beyond the sea of shadows."
The loss of youth is a prevalent theme throughout the collection, especially when the narrator contemplates his reflection in the bathroom mirror and states, "I skate razor/over pockmarked visage/trying to erase/salt and pepper shadow."
Despite the loss of youth theme, there is a carpe diem attitude to some of the poetry, such as "Outside the Hotel," which was published as a broadside by Architrave Press in 2013. In that poem, the narrator suggests dancing "on the blue lawn/outside the hotel/means everything/in those hours of promise/before the sun."
