Kirby Wrightabout this book: These Selected Poems are broken into 4 separate books, ones that represent my various writing residencies overseas and in the states. There is a final book dedicated to my adolescent years in Honolulu. All of the poems have been published in literary reviews and university magazines, either online or hard copy. I think the thing that saved the poet in me was getting an all-expense paid offer to join the Pulitzer Winner GARY SNYDER on the lecture circuit in Hong Kong. I opened up the International Writers Conference reciting "Black Point, Oahu" at the Marco Polo Hotel downtown. A coed from Hong Kong University played a white baby grand while I recited my lines. I felt like a rock star. I felt unworthy of all this attention.
After Hong Kong came Martha's Vineyard and the Czech Republic. That cover is a pencil sketch from a widow living on the banks of Lake Bled. Write to me and I'll send you the actual photo I took of her home. I find it important to travel because staying in one place too long dulls the senses. I think travel is vital for the creative mind. There are poems and prose poems in this book, and I think you'll be reminded of some of the works of Kafka. I placed a bouquet of yellow roses on his statue in Prague.
• Have you ever suffered from a "writer's block?" What did you do to get past the "block?"
Yes. But as strange as this seems, I've written some of my best poetry when I'm low. Writers should use their shifting moods to write different material, maybe experiment a bit in different genres or even try painting. Good things can come from depression, I kid you not.
• What do you do to unwind and relax? Do you have a hobby?
I race turtles in the backyard. Once a hawk swooped down and scooped up a turtle. My kitten found that turtle later alive near the fence. I also take my turtles down to the beach and let them run around. You should see the crowds I attract.
