Sandra J. Hookhamabout this book: This 100+ page book is a compilation of rhyming poetry put together by my husband, Thomas Hookham, and me, Sandra Hookham. It is dedicated to the Sullivan family, and the opening poem is from the book Lisa's Triumph: Victory over Leukemia (author - Sandra Hookham). It features one of my favorite poems, Paths to Reservations. There are 15 stanzas begining with:
Many, many decades now reversed,
"We the people..." feebly put ashore,
Trembling ships from seas occursed,
With tattered sails and rats galore.
Including such thoughts as:
We robbed this land and pushed them out,
Stripping its resources and killing the game,
Then from booms of ridicule--a victory shout,
To hid the squander and the shame.
They have their reservations now,
Where the land is harsh and rough,
As we have ours while heads we bow,
And listen to voices that cry "Enough."
And ends with:
The white man's greed took this land
By deceit and brutal attack,
Yet "Indian Gaming" extends a welcome hand--
And the white man's greed will give it back.
Another favorite is Dust Covered Ambrosia (30 stanzas) which ends with:
Such memories may tickle the senses...
Leaving behid a definite yearning,
To cross back over those vanishing fences
That time and neglect are slowly burning.
But remember this and keep in mind--
Tomorrow, today will have gathered some dust,
And the smiles of the morning will soon fall behind
The shadows of remembrance in which we trust.
Like soft rose petals or sweet lilac scent,
You savor each whiff, but the taste is forbdden...
While those things beyond touch--with deepest repent--
In an unending space will always be hidden.
These were excerpt from only two of the 24 poems in this book.
If you enjoy good rhyming poetry that tells a story or has a message, you will the the poems in this book.
