Jeffrey Boldenabout this book: Book Of Soul is a book of short stories, poems, and prose that really captures the darkness I was suffering in the three years I was attending this university, but also captures the light at the end of the tunnel as my skills hone toward the end and my voice really begins to shine throughout. The book is basically a road map to life as I saw it in those three years, a year after publishing my first book, "Smokin' Hydrophonic." It's refreshing, it's therapeutic but most of all, it's real.
My inspiration came from one place. I have this friend, this love who has been reading my poetry for a long time and she used to say that she wish she had a book of poetry and when I thought of that, I just knew this was who I was going to make this book for. For her. The primary readers other than who I just described are other poets, women of all different backgrounds, and people who go against the grain in general. My stories and poetry may scare those who aren't up to the challenge of venturing outside of an ordinary mindset, but to those adventurous souls, Book Of Soul is for you.
The title, Book Of soul, came from a song by Ab-Soul in which he raps about the death/suicide of his love, Alori Joh, and that song really touched me in a way because I was relating to what it felt like to really lose someone who you felt was the only person who understood you at times. In two of my poems, "Alicia" and "July X Free Spirit", I used the beat to really describe the loss of these two women in my life. But when I wrote these two poems, I found myself really finding inner peace and clarity within myself. The cover comes from a splice of two times in my life. Times where I was seemingly most depressed with life in general. Times of great struggle and that's what I want Book Of Soul to represent.
Hardest part about putting this together was the honesty I knew went into Book Of Soul. It was hard to admit some of the facts in this book were true, some of the feelings in this book were true, but once I was able to admit this to myself, I was able to do something to help myself. This was my journey to self-realization and I would love for any of you readers to take this journey with. Walk with me and realize the light at the end of the tunnel just as I did.
