Queue McPherson about this book: I recently experienced a blazing moment of clarity after discovering some startling similarities between elements of stoic philosophy, taoist thought, and the mystical christian thought that has dominated the Rosicrucian, Masonic, and cabalistic orders throughout western culture. The perpetual human search for Zen-like mental clarity and stoic indifference being of particular importance to my work. The mystics of the Cathar sect of Christianity were especially influencial here, in spite of their eventual demotion to heretic status by the Roman Catholic Church in its more, shall we say, iron-fisted days.
With these elements in mind, I soon conceived a grand vision through which this universal push towards healing, balance and serenity could be channeled into a brief but elegant manifesto, fashioned so as to highlight the major aspects of this life system; and to then mold them into a simple philosophy or rule of life, if you will, called the 'Sword of Detachment'. It serves to guide our thoughts and to temper our actions; not unlike the rules of life by which monastic, knightly and priestly orders operate to this day, but with a somewhat Spartan twist.
