Deborah Dianabout this book: After working with teenagers for the past decade, I slowly began to realize that many of them are profoundly troubled by lies they have been told, either by their parents or their teachers. As a result, young people often feel that they have been hurt and mislead by adults they trusted.
This book is intended for parents, teachers, grandparents and anyone who works with children. It covers topics ranging from the parent who lies to their child about a sick or dying relative, to a teacher who insists that everyone must go to college.
Among the other lies discussed are "School is a Safe Place," "You Don't Need to Know the Meaning of that Word," "My Teenagers are Old Enough to be Home by Themselves and They Won't Do Anything Wrong," and "My Children Will Learn to Handle Money When They Grow Up."
I chose the cover art because it depicts a small child wearing a cap and gown and holding a diploma. By kindergarten, we are often pushing children along the college prep track ... which isn't appropriate for all kids.
I learned a great deal in researching this book. Some of the stories people shared with me made me realize how many adults are still upset by the lies they were told as children.
I hope this book will open the eyes of parents and teachers before they pass on more misinformation to their children and students.
