Chris Edmonds about this book: Growing up in a small, country village in Devon, England, I was surrounded by folklore and quirky customs whose obscure origins are buried deep in the Celtic traditions. There are many examples of these so-called 'superstitions' but something I always found really odd, was the horror that swept across my mother's face if we ever thought to burn a photograph. She was convinced that something terrible would befall the picture's subject if their image was destroyed by flames. Oddly enough, Native Americans had a somewhat similar response to early cameras and, whilst teaching biology in Africa, I encountered the same misgivings among the Samburu of northern Kenya. For some reason these 'silly notions' got stuck in my mind and finally gave rise to the seed of a story that would ultimately grow into 'My Life in Black and White'. As a footnote, the original name of the book was 'Shades of Grey' but sadly, somebody else beat me to that title.
