Author K.J. McPikeabout this book: What do you do when you are suddenly sure you can't trust your own eyes anymore? Sixteen-year-old Lali Yavari is in search of the answer to that very question. As if coping with her mother's abandonment and helping her father take care of her four younger siblings wasn't hard enough, now she is flashing between realities and seeing people vanish into thin air. But things in Lali's world start to unravel even faster once she discovers the truth: she has inherited the ability to astral project—with a surprising twist—and everything she saw was real.

XODUS is my first novel, and it falls into the genre I love the most: Young Adult Paranormal Fiction. (I may technically be an adult, but I refuse to grow up!) It is the first book of the Astralis series, which centers around another thing I love: the idea of astral projection. I have never been able to astral project myself, but it is something that has always fascinated me. Until I manage to figure out how to do it, I will just live vicariously through my characters.

While astral projection is (sadly) not one of them, there are a lot of pieces of my life woven into the story, which is probably one of the reasons I enjoyed writing it so much. The story was actually inspired by the tattoo I have on the back of my neck of a symbol that combines my own first initial with the initials of my four siblings. When I was dealing with a particularly strong case of writer's block with another story I was working on, I started rubbing the back of my neck as I was thinking, and it hit me that it would be fun to write a novel about a bunch of siblings connected by a supernatural symbol. XODUS has morphed into something very different since I first go the idea nearly three years ago, but that's how it started. Thankfully, the idea gave me a whole series to work with, so I won't have to run out and get another tattoo for inspiration. At least, not anytime soon.

Keep you eyes out for the second book in the series, XODUS Genesis, due out in the fall of 2016!
