J.J. DiBenedettoabout this book: "Dream Student" is the first of a four novel series following Sara Barnes, an ordinary young college stusent who discovers that she's anything but, when she learns that she can see other people's dreams.
Now, instead of just worrying about whether she's going to pass her physics final, she's trying to cope with knowing all of her friends' deepest secrets and hidden fantasies. That would be bad enough. But she's also seeing the dreams of a strange man, who might be a serial killer...and if she's right, she's also the only witness to his crimes.
This book, to me, is an antidote to so many of the contemporary books and movies that feature self-destructive or anti-heroic lead characters, people who make bad choices and are celebrated and rewarded for it. I didn't set out to preach, and I don't think the book does that, but it does feature a heroine who's smart and capable and follows her conscience, even at great risk to herself. She gets frightened and flustered, and sometimes she panics, but at the end of the day, she stands up for what's right, and she lets her compassion rather than her fear or selfishness guide her actions. That's a refreshing change, and it makes Sara someone that I hope readers can both identify with and root for.
I've had this story in mind for nearly 15 years; the original first draft was written back in 1998, but only in the last year did I come back to it and really do the job properly. I hope that readers will enjoy it; I put everything I've got into this book.
