G G Collinsabout this book: Just a moment of distraction and all hell breaks loose. That's what happened to reporter Rachel Blackstone, our "Reluctant Medium." She desperately wanted to speak with her father. Only problem? He's dead—and under mysterious circumstances. A Hopi shaman she interviewed had shared with her a ceremony to return the dead. She tried it. It worked. But the wrong soul returned! This one was evil and hell-bent on revenge. In particular, the target of this rage seemed directed at her brother, the unpopular Santa Fe mayor.
A few other things have changed as well. There's the peculiar howling wolf, where no wolf should be. Rachel is confused about his intentions: friend or foe? Then other apparitions begin to appear. Her friend Chloe, a real estate tycoon, is certain that Rachel has somehow become a medium. Rachel is a fact-based journalist and none of this makes sense to her. That doesn't matter, because she has opened a portal and stepped through.
She and Chloe begin investigating a scandal that could lead right to City Hall. And there's that little matter of the evil spirit she inadvertently released. Her date with destiny waits when she must find her power and return the wicked ghoul or die trying. When I learned of the real Native American ceremony to return the dead, my first question was: What if the wrong spirit returned? With my years of reporting, I knew there was a story.
But I wanted more than a paranormal mystery; I wanted a story about two friends. "Reluctant Medium" became a buddy story about two women. It also has humor, sometimes on the dark side, but Rachel is cynical and can't help but find the whole matter preposterous. And sometimes her repartee is a bit like whistling in a shadowy alley.
The title was easy. Rachel is reluctant to this new task of medium and there are so many TV shows that use the word in their title. Now the cover was really fun to do. You can check my blog for the entire low-down on how I did it (http://reluctantmediumatlarge.wordpress.com , but the quick story is that it took one afternoon. I had sketched it out before (art major in college) so I knew what I wanted. After setting the items in a still life presentation, I lit the candle and began taking photos. Once I had the photo I liked, I applied a special effect called "Heat" which gave it a creepy feel and voilà, a cover!
I hope readers have a fun ride with "Reluctant Medium." Yes, I hope you're a little bit scared, and there are some mild horror effects, but just have fun with it. It's a fast read, but with time to catch your breath before the next escapade.
"Lemurian Medium" is currently under construction and if Rachel isn't very careful, she could be forever lost in the cosmos.
