Book Review: The Spell of New Mexico by Tony Hillermancategories: Book, Travel Writing, New Mexico
Publisher: University of New Mexico Press
Good readingAfter I visited New Mexico, a close friend presented me with this collection of essays, each in its own way weaving a spell. You can read the essays for their literary value alone and be satisfied that you have read something of value. If you are planning to visit the state, you can read the book simply for information and arrive prepared for what you will find there.
I have seen nothing anywhere equal to this book in terms of how it brings the hauntingly beautiful New Mexico landscape to life. Revitalizing my memory of the place, these essays make me want to go back again and again. I've been there twice, each time returning to my New England home feeling I have been in another country altogether, but knowing that this is a part of our country that is not to be missed. Hillerman's book makes this point brilliantly and it is superb. I recommend it highly.
