Alessandra Gelmi about this book: My poems are holograms of my heart. Everything is fodder for a poem, because everything shares the hallmark of God. I tell my Creative Writing students they shouldn't have to explain their poems, rather allow the poems to speak for themselves. I have no dogma or working aesthetic regarding poetry. There are no rules, just examples, and ultimately the poems I read and the poems I write reveal my taste. The poems in this collection tend to be narrative yet thickly textured, more a word climate where meaning is obliquely suggested rather than actually established. I am fascinated by the ambiguity of words and love to employ the surprise factor. Surprising the reader is something I've got down pat.
My first poem was published when I was sixteen. It won the Irene Leach Memorial Prize for Poetry, open to all Virginia state residents. I won for a sonnet about a nightingale. "Sonnet to a Literary Popstar" is included in the collection.
