Dianne Harmanabout this book: I wrote this book because so many people wanted to know what happened to Maria after she left the United States for Provence, France.
Maria Brooks changes her name and reinvents herself to escape being tried for the murder of her husband. She falls in love with a Los Angeles Police Department Art Theft detective who is in France on a case involving a gallery theft in Laguna Beach, California.
An additional story is woven into the plot, that of a wealthy cosmetics manufacturer originally from Afghanistan, who visits her plant in Marseilles. She begins to illegally help young Afghan girls escape through France and later assist them in coming to the United States.
Slade Kelly, a lovably reprobate, is the private investigator who is central to the plot. Many readers have told me that he is their very favorite book character. Privately, I might have to agree!
Will the handsome detective find the art? Will Maria escape the law? Will the readers gain ten pounds just from reading about the fabulous food and wine available in Provence? And who are those orphan girls in the barn and what's going to happen to them?
