Mary Lee Tiernanabout this book: I was sitting on my patio taking a break from research for a history book when a scene began to play in my mind. I saw myself traveling down a picturesque mountain road. "Hmmm," I said to myself, "maybe you've been working too hard and it's time to hop in the RV for a trip." I pictured myself stopping for lunch beside a mountain stream, then shrugged, and went back to my research.
On my next break, the scene began again but went a little further and I saw my lunch interrupted by the appearance of a very hungry dog and then by young man who raised a hammer to strike me. For three days, every time I sat back to relax, the scene returned—crystal clear, as though I was watching a movie. Finally I decided that if my muse was talking to me that strongly, I should write down the scene.
When I returned to the computer, I pushed my research aside, called up a "new" document, and began to write. As soon as I finished typing the scene, another appeared. For days on end, the real world disappeared, and I sat at the computer 16 hours a day typing. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before. My fingers could not type fast enough to record the images flashing through my mind. The story so completely captivated me that when I was writing a scene where Dorsey, the hungry dog mentioned above, was hurt by a madman, I cried the whole time I was typing.
Finally, Detective Mahoney said, "We do, Princess, we most certainly do." I had finished the rough draft of "Stopping in Lonely Places."
Of course, the work continued with proofreading and rewrites and designing a cover, etc. but when I finally published the book, I was gratified by the reaction of readers. One Amazon reviewer wrote, "I didn't read many pages of this book before I was totally fascinated by the story and I absolutely could not put it down until I had finished it." Other reviewers expressed a similar sentiment.
The novel crosses several genres: mystery/detective, romance, and animal stories. They all work well together. Another Amazon reviewer commented, "This was a great little book...loved the dog! Loved the romance...loved the solving of the mystery! I recommend it highly."
