Ben Woodardabout this book: Tom and Will are back again in their new adventure, Steps Into Darkness. Tom plans to leave Shakertown when a horrific event changes his mind. Someone is sabotaging a construction site and the boys are drawn into a perplexing mystery when Tom decides to investigate. Tom battles with bullies and his past while hunting a mysterious group called the Knights. After narrow escapes from attempts on their lives, Tom and Will discover the real villain, and then wish they hadn't.
The book is realistic fiction about real-life boys in an earlier time without vampires, ancient gods, or time travel. The book sprang from stories that family members told me about growing up in a small town in Kentucky in the twenties. Tales of lost gold and river caves, and fun. And of friendship that endures through adversity and danger. This is a book that doesn't whitewash the racism and sexism of its time, but focuses on two boys and their adventures.
Quotes from reviews:

• "While the story in Steps into Darkness is fictional, the scene and 1920's background is authentic and the historical blends seamlessly with action-filled storytelling."
