Gary Showalterabout this book: "Hog Valley" is set in Marion County, north of Orlando. Marion County is prime horse country, and also the gateway to the Ocala National Forest. The tale placed in this incredibly diverse and engaging setting is one of greed, loyalty and desperation. I don't write morality tales, though. I write mysteries and adventure stories set in Florida. But our morals both drive us and in some cases damn us to courses of action we would often prefer to leave to others. Except when we can't...
Each of my novels (I have 4 published now) takes me 2 years to research, write and edit. I just can't work as fast as most of the authors I know, but I do spend much of that time walking the locations of my scenes and interviewing people who live in the area. So I guess that's all right, then. I don't really waste any of those 2 years. Really. I don't. Honest.
I write about people, not plots. Plots are a convenient crutch on which to hang a tale, but I write about people; how they react in stressful situations, how they deal with each other and how they (eventually) work out a solution to the problems in their lives.
That is just so much more interesting than some made-up plot.
But there is a plot in there, somewhere...
